Are you tired of making the same old French toast recipe that always turns out thin and soggy? Then it’s time to discover the secrets of making thick and delicious Hong Kong French toast! This recipe is a game-changer and will leave your taste buds craving for more.

Authentic Hong Kong Style French Toast is our afternoon favourite. This is such a classic staple in any Hong Kong Local Cafe. (Cha Chaan Teng)

Cha chaan teng, which translates to “tea restaurant” in Cantonese, is a type of casual eatery in Hong Kong that serves a fusion of traditional Chinese dishes and Western-style fast food. These restaurants are popular among locals for their affordable prices, quick service, and diverse menu options.

They offer a unique culinary experience that reflects Hong Kong’s cultural identity and history. Cha chaan tengs have also gained international attention and have been featured in various media outlets and travel guides, contributing to their popularity.

Hong Kong French Toast is a staple in cha chaan tengs, traditional Hong Kong diners, and it’s not hard to see why.

The secret to making this delicious dish lies in the technique.

The bread is first coated in a mixture of beaten eggs and evaporated milk, then deep-fried until it’s golden brown and crispy on the outside. But what sets Hong Kong-style French toast apart is the addition of a sweet, creamy filling, typically made from peanut butter or condensed milk.

To make this dish at home, you’ll need some key ingredients, including white bread, eggs, evaporated milk, sugar, and butter. But the true secret lies in the filling. Try spreading a layer of creamy peanut butter or drizzling condensed milk over the top for a truly decadent experience.

While this dish is delicious on its own, it’s typically served alongside a cup of Hong Kong-style milk tea, a rich and creamy beverage made from black tea and evaporated milk. The combination of the sweet, creamy French toast and the bold, slightly bitter tea is a match made in breakfast heaven.

Don’t be intimidated by the idea of making Hong Kong French toast at home. With a little bit of practice and the right ingredients, you can recreate this delicious dish in your own kitchen. Impress your family and friends with your newfound culinary skills and introduce them to the delicious flavours of Hong Kong-style French toast.
