What is peach gum and what are the benefits of peach gum in this Luxurious Peach Gum Dessert Soup?
Peach gum, also known as “Tao Jiao” (桃膠) in Chinese, is a natural resin that is obtained from peach trees, particularly from wounds or injuries on the trees. When a peach tree is wounded or damaged, it exudes a viscous liquid that gradually hardens and crystallizes into a gum-like substance. This substance is then collected and dried, resulting in the peach gum that is used in culinary and traditional medicine applications.
Peach gum is highly valued in Asian cuisines, particularly in Chinese and Southeast Asian cooking, where it is often used in desserts and sweet soups. It has a translucent appearance and a delicate texture that softens when soaked or cooked. Peach gum is believed to have potential health benefits, especially for the skin, as it is considered to be rich in collagen. This has led to its use in various beauty and wellness practices.
Peach gum is treasured in culinary preparations for its unique texture and ability to absorb flavours. It is often soaked in water overnight to rehydrate before being used in recipes. The rehydrated peach gum can then be added to various dishes, such as soups, desserts, and beverages, to provide a distinct texture and a subtle flavour.
Overall, peach gum is a natural resin with a history deeply rooted in traditional culinary and medicinal practices. It has gained popularity for its culinary versatility, potential health benefits, and the luxurious touch it adds to dishes. And I hope you will try my recipe for Luxurious Peach Gum Dessert Soup.
Peach gum is often hailed for its potential health benefits, particularly in traditional Chinese medicine and certain Asian cultures. While scientific research on its benefits is limited, some traditional beliefs and anecdotal evidence suggest several potential advantages:
- Skin Health: One of the most well-known benefits of peach gum is its association with skin health. It is believed to be rich in collagen, a protein that supports skin elasticity and hydration. Consuming peach gum is thought to promote smoother and more supple skin.
- Digestive Health: Peach gum’s mucilaginous nature can provide a soothing effect on the digestive system. It might help with digestive discomfort and inflammation, potentially aiding in issues like gastritis and acid reflux.
- Cooling Properties: In traditional Chinese medicine, peach gum is considered to have cooling properties. It is believed to help balance excess internal heat in the body, making it a suitable ingredient for hot weather or to counterbalance “heaty” foods.
- Anti-Inflammatory: The resin’s anti-inflammatory properties are said to contribute to its ability to soothe irritation and inflammation in the body.
- Beauty Benefits: Beyond internal consumption, peach gum is sometimes used externally in beauty treatments like masks or skincare products. It is thought to enhance skin elasticity, hydration, and overall complexion.
- Joint Health: Some traditional practices suggest that consuming peach gum could support joint health and alleviate joint-related discomfort due to its collagen content.
It’s important to note that while these benefits are widely discussed in traditional medicine and culinary practices, there is limited scientific research to confirm all these claims. As with any dietary supplement or natural remedy, individual responses may vary. If you’re considering incorporating peach gum into your diet for its potential benefits, it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medications.

What is Gum Karaya and what are the benefits of Gum Karayta in this Easy Luxurious Peach Gum Dessert Soup?
Gum karaya, also known as Indian tragacanth, is a natural gum obtained from several species of Sterculia trees, primarily Sterculia urens and Sterculia tragacantha. These trees are native to certain regions of India, Pakistan, and other parts of Southeast Asia.
Gum karaya has been used for various purposes due to its unique properties. It is primarily composed of complex carbohydrates and has several potential benefits when consumed:
- Digestive Health: Gum karaya is known for its high dietary fibre content. Consuming foods rich in dietary fibre can support digestive health by promoting regular bowel movements and preventing constipation. It may also help with maintaining a healthy gut microbiome.
- Weight Management: Because it is rich in dietary fibre, gum karaya can help increase feelings of fullness, potentially reducing overall calorie intake. This can be beneficial for those looking to manage their weight.
- Blood Sugar Control: Dietary fibre can help regulate blood sugar levels by slowing down the absorption of sugars in the digestive tract. This can be particularly important for individuals with diabetes or those at risk of developing the condition.
- Cholesterol Management: Some studies suggest that a high-fibre diet, including foods like gum karaya, may help lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease.
- Appetite Control: The fibre in gum karaya may help control appetite by stabilizing blood sugar levels and reducing cravings for high-sugar or high-calorie foods.
- Gut Health: Fiber-rich foods like gum karaya can promote a healthy gut microbiome by providing nourishment for beneficial gut bacteria.
- Hydration: Gum karaya can absorb and retain water, which can help prevent dehydration in certain food products. It can also contribute to the feeling of fullness when consumed with water.
It’s important to note that while gum karaya has potential health benefits, it’s not a magic solution for any health condition. The benefits of consuming it are primarily related to its high dietary fibre content. As with any dietary changes or supplements, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you have specific health concerns or dietary requirements. Additionally, individuals with allergies or sensitivities to gum karaya should exercise caution when consuming it.
