Easy Sweet and Sour Fish Recipe

Chinese Super Easy Sweet and Sour Fish Recipe

Easy Sweet and Sour Fish recipe that is even better than a restaurant. Our Family can easily finish the whole plate in one go.

Cantonese Sweet and Sour Pork (and I have shared my recipe before!) is one of the most popular dishes in many places around the world.

Crispy fish nuggets and thick and sticky sweet and sour sauce, my family definitely loves this easy Sweet and Sour Fish Recipe so much and I always need to prepare more rice whenever I am making this dish. The more you eat it, the harder it is to stop.

My aunt in Hong Kong has taught me about this dish, she is one of the sweetest people I know and she is a great cook herself! Whenever I visit her house, she would prepare at least 6 dishes on the dinner table and one soup. I always feel so loved!

The Cantonese version always has pineapple or peach in it, which has a bit more of a balance between sweet and sour flavours. I do not have pineapple in my kitchen today so I didn’t add it to my easy Sweet and Sour Fish Recipe, but I highly recommend you add either pineapple or peach to the dish! They definitely enhance the flavours!

I sometimes love to make this with pork, shrimp or even tofu ( if you want it to be vegetarian), hubby loves the shrimp version so much too, if you are tired of pork or fish, try them out!

What kind of fish is the best for this easy Sweet and Sour Fish Recipe?

I used Cod here, but you can use any fish that is fatty enough. Deep fried is a cooking method that tends to dry the protein, so fattier is better in this case. I have tried deep-fried with cod, red snapper, salmon, fish fillet etc. They all turn out very tasty.

What oil do you use for deep frying?

I use grapeseed oil for deep frying, it is because it has a high smoking point and is a rich source of vitamin E, phenolic antioxidants, and omega-6 fatty acids. Try to avoid canola oil as much as possible because they are very bad for your body!

Can the fish be made in advance for this Easy Sweet and Sour Fish Recipe?

Absolutely! I always meal prep on the weekend! So what I do is I only coat the fish and deep fry them when I need to make this dish. I fillet the fish, soak them in the salted water and pat dry them. Then I store them in an air-tight container. They are good for 3 days in the fridge.

How often does deep fryer oil change?

I always drain the used oil and keep it in a glass container. They can be reused around 3-4 times depending on what you cook. Start with lighter flavour dishes such as potato fries, then maybe chicken or pork. If you are looking for more deep-fried recipes, make sure you check my other deep-fried recipes.

Can you use an air-fryer for this Easy Sweet and Sour Fish Recipe?

Absolutely! I, however, always use the traditional method – deep fry with oil. I am sure the air fryer will work too! I would suggest the oil temperature is around 160C for a deep fryer and medium-high power for an air fryer.
